about

Scott Iwasaki, music critic and Park Record newspaper Scene Editor:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There is nothing in this world like the love a boy has for his mother. And there is nothing more acutely painful than the loss of a parent — especially when the parent, who was intellectually and spiritually strong, succumbs to the numbness of dementia due to age.

Electronic music composer Eric Fuerer, who goes by the moniker Embrace the Race, knows these feelings inside and out. And after the recent death of his mother Marla, he did what he does best — create music that not only honored his mother, but also helped him deal with the emptiness her death left in his heart and in the world.

Fuerer, who has been composing music for the past 18 years and released six full-length albums, has created the most personal pieces of his career and compiled them into the album “Tribute: The Singles.”
The 18-track collection, featuring a painting of Marla Fuerer by the composer’s brother Robert, was released 7/1/2018.

“Tribute” kicks off with an aptly titled and sonically optimistic work, “Stay Afloat.” The musical textures surround a positive melody that can serve as a reminder that there is light in a world that is sometimes bogged down with darkness.

The tracks continue with the heartfelt “Two Hearts as One,” which features a human voice that dots the soundscape. The voice gives the piece a vulnerable touch that highlights the tonal layerings.

While there are a few works that feature human voices, one stand-out track is “Just Flow Away.” Instead of sing-song vocals, the voice peppers the beat-friendly work with a simple phrase — “A life could simply flow away.”
The listener gets the feeling that the sentence sums up the composer’s feeling of seeing his mother, who ran a neighborhood preschool, lose her battle with dementia.

Other ear-catching and emotional-pleasing tracks include the otherworldly “Stratus Sphere,” the jazzy “Chinese Fire Drill” and the koto-sample laced “Dumplings.”

While all of the tracks take on different characteristics in Fuerer’s journey to honor his mom’s legacy, selfless attitude and service, my favorite track is “The Spirit of Music.”

The all-too-short work features on-the-verge of whispering vocals cradled in a dynamic, dreamlike mix that urges the listener to never give up.
The final track, “Tears of Faith,” while a somber title, is an upbeat number that fills the listener with hope — and optimism that helps the listener find solace and closure through faith and perseverance.

As Fuerer says in is artistic statement: “This album is my way of becoming empowered by giving to those who are still afflicted. Exactly half of the profits will be donated to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund."
